ICJ 80th Anniversary: Audiovisual Support, Interpretation and Event Registration at the Peace Palace

For the 80th anniversary of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Heuvelman Sound & Vision delivered complete audiovisual support, including simultaneous interpretation, camera recording and signal distribution across multiple rooms within the Peace Palace.

The Challenge

The International Court of Justice celebrated its 80th anniversary. The event required a technical setup that matched the formal and international character of the occasion, attended by high-level guests. In addition to the main hall, the programme needed to be broadcast live to several other locations within the Peace Palace.

This required a reliable audiovisual solution for video, audio and event recording, with a strong focus on speech intelligibility, synchronisation and multilingual interpretation.

Technical Challenge

The main event took place in the Great Hall of Justice while simultaneously being streamed to the Small Hall of Justice and the Auditorium. As these rooms are located on opposite sides of the Peace Palace, the complete infrastructure had to be connected in a way that prevented latency while maintaining the highest possible audio and video quality.

Camera placement was also challenging due to the limited available space, particularly for the front-facing speaker camera. In addition, speech had to remain perfectly intelligible throughout every room, while all temporary equipment had to integrate seamlessly with the existing AV installation previously delivered at the venue.

Our Approach

• Strategic microphone placement ensured that even the first words spoken during the arrival of His Majesty the King were captured for both the live broadcast and future recordings.
• A production manager familiar with the venue was assigned immediately after receiving the request, allowing preparations to begin without delay.
• The temporary event setup was fully integrated with the existing audiovisual infrastructure, ensuring maximum reliability throughout the event.

The Solution

Heuvelman supplied and operated:

• Loudspeaker systems for clear speech intelligibility
• Digital infrared (IR) interpretation receivers with headsets
• Dome cameras and ENG cameras, including camera operators, for professional video recording
• Displays and loudspeakers in the overflow rooms (Small Hall of Justice and Auditorium)

The Result

The complete programme could be followed simultaneously in the Great Hall of Justice as well as the overflow rooms, with excellent audio quality, clear visuals and multilingual interpretation available throughout the venue.

Because the solution integrated with the existing AV installation, the technical execution remained reliable, discreet and perfectly suited to the formal setting.

The presence of His Majesty the King of the Netherlands and the Secretary-General of the United Nations classified this as a true high-profile event.
