5 Discussion Hammers: what did this classification mean for meeting and event venues?

Five Vergaderhamers represented the highest quality level within the former classification system for conference and meeting venues. Locations were assessed extensively on their quality, facilities and service. The Vergaderhamers name is no longer used for the current quality label: since 2021, it has continued as YOIN excellent meeting places.

5 Vergaderhamers: what did this classification mean for meeting and event venues?

For professional meeting and event venues, quality involves much more than a well-presented room. Hospitality, facilities, safety, comfort and technology all contribute to an environment in which business meetings and events can run professionally. For many years, the Vergaderhamers classification helped make that quality visible.

The five hammers did not represent five separate categories. Five Vergaderhamers represented the highest classification level a venue could achieve.

What were the Vergaderhamers?

Vergaderhamers was a quality label for the conference and meeting industry. Established in 1995, the label was designed to provide insight into areas including quality, expertise, reliability and service at professional meeting venues.

Participating venues went through an extensive inspection process. The resulting score determined the number of Vergaderhamers awarded.

The classification system changed over the years. Older documentation refers to classifications ranging from one to five Vergaderhamers. In the later version of the quality label, venues could receive three, four or five Vergaderhamers, depending on their score. Five remained the highest possible level.

This distinction is important: the five hammers did not represent five assessment categories, but the quality level achieved by the venue.

How were meeting and event venues assessed?

In the later version of the Vergaderhamers system, an inspector assessed a venue on approximately 140 different aspects. The classification therefore covered much more than the appearance of meeting rooms.

Historical publications on the classification mention areas such as appearance, safety, organisation, hygiene, comfort, facilities and service. Technical elements were also included. Inspections looked, for example, at climate systems, sound systems and lighting.

These examples should not be interpreted as a fixed set of seven official categories. The requirements and structure of the quality label evolved over time. They mainly illustrate the broad scope of the assessment.

Why did audiovisual technology matter?

A professional meeting depends heavily on what participants can see and hear. A venue may provide a high standard of interior design, catering and hospitality, but technical issues can immediately affect the experience of a meeting, presentation or conference.

Historical documentation relating to Vergaderhamers shows that sound systems and lighting were among the elements considered during inspections. Audiovisual technology was therefore part of the broader quality picture of a professional venue.

In everyday operation, quality goes beyond simply having equipment available. For hotels and event venues, speech intelligibility, clear presentation visuals, straightforward operation and a reliable technical environment all contribute to a professional meeting experience.

The purpose of each space matters as well. A boardroom has different requirements from a training room, conference hall or multifunctional space that changes configuration throughout the day. Professional meeting systems, video and audio can help support these different applications.

What did 5 Vergaderhamers mean for a venue?

Five Vergaderhamers showed that a venue had achieved the highest level within the classification system in use at the time. In its later form, this meant performing strongly across a large proportion of the extensive quality requirements.

The classification therefore went beyond the appearance of an individual meeting room. It considered the venue and the services surrounding it as a whole.

For event organisers and corporate clients, the label provided a recognisable way to assess the quality of potential venues. For venues themselves, the inspection process offered insight into areas that were already performing well and where further improvements could be made. Historical communication from Vergaderhamers explicitly positioned the inspection as a quality analysis that could support further improvements.

Do the 5 Vergaderhamers still exist?

Not under that name.

In 2021, Vergaderhamers became YOIN excellent meeting places. CLC-VECTA explicitly describes the current quality label as formerly known as Vergaderhamers. Today, YOIN excellent meeting places focuses on conference and event venues and is part of the services provided by YOIN Exploitatie B.V.

The current YOIN excellent meeting places quality label operates differently from the former hammer classification. CLC-VECTA states that facilities, service, hygiene, communication and maintenance are assessed annually. The process includes a self-audit, an audit by a professional and a mystery audit.

Venue quality extends beyond a quality label

Although the Vergaderhamers name has disappeared, the underlying focus on quality remains relevant. Hotels, conference centres and event venues need to support a wide range of business meetings while providing a consistent experience.

Audiovisual technology is one part of that experience. Video, audio and control systems need to match the room, its purpose and the different types of meetings hosted at the venue. For multifunctional locations in particular, the interaction between technology, space and service contributes significantly to the professional experience of an event.
